Just got back from Tonga. Tonga is a great place and I stayed with a great family. This is O'fa, young father of the family that hosted me. A talented guy that can use a machete 500 different ways - no wonder tool belts are non-existant in Tonga (machete not shown). We were taught how to make the Tapa cloth from the bark wood that is so prominent in the islands of Tonga - that is what is hanging up and piled up in the garage. The cement tower, as well as the lower cylindrical cement tank are for catching rainwater - which is like gold to these people. Life was very good in tonga these past 3 weeks.

These are some semi-recent work (2009) that were a part of the Wi small works show. I did these in one day as a study of some of my friend Kalani and my journals. Emulating color theory and handwriting has been two really fun learning exercises. These were fun pieces because it felt like they were collaborations with a friend I never get to see anymore.

Loved the black and white version. So I thought I'd post it. If I had time I'd probably simplify the shadow composition even more, but I don't. Emulating has been fun - but I'm anxious to find my own style in comics. Featured here is Iron Man (Silver Centurion Armor), two of his many victims The Beetle and the unjustly attacked Stingray. Behind ol' shell head is Firepower - who ended the Silver Centurion era.

A collaboration job with my wife Keiko, who is a photographer. I offered Leland help to do his upcoming show's advertisement, secretly I wanted to butter him up to do an artist trade with me (which I did), because his work is spectacular. Check out his upcoming show. On a side note, I love graphic design. My wife is twisting my arm to upload more of my graphic design work onto this blog for a potential extended portfolio. On another note, I hate when designs that involve text is a shoddy marriage - in other words, the text looks slapped on. My goal here was to integrate the text in a way that makes it necessary to the comp. I tried to lay out a font usage in Leland's poster that played off of the gothic architecture symbolism that was already present in the photo. The brush ink font (my own handwriting) was used to contrast the title by playing off of the only other element in this image: fire; which is by nature more organic. This might be too theatrical for an art show ad, but Leland gave me the ok - so I went for it.

The drawing and inking for this was a quickee in Mignola style I did as a demo for my brother Shem, who is trying to get into drawing. Mignola is his choice of stye to learn about visual story-telling, and as long as he is doing that I will probably be doing a few Mignola myself from time to time. We have a goal to draw all the toys we have, I started with Ultimate Iron Man.

It would be great if I could sit behind the pulpit, I'd have the entire congregation to draw. . . (I think it will be awhile). Kids by the way, mine are always made-up versions because they move around too much for me to do any likeness.

Both these girls are serious - only one knows I'm drawing them. The one on the right (thinking heart) is my favorite of little Sophia so far.

Drawing Fiona is like drawing a little girl version of me (which means there is pretty much no difference).

Here is an under coat and pencil drawing (transfer) that are the beginnings of my next studio painting project. Artists like Barnaby Ward and fellow BYU grad student Wei Zong (Kris) have turned me on to artist Lebbeus Woods, which this under drawing is presently heavily influenced by. Hopefully after I get through painting over this it'll look more like my own. Drawing this random value-depth-shape form is really forgiving on the eraser. 24"x24" paper on mounted panel.

Lots and lots of mix media. I was on the mental verge of learning something here but didn't get it until I was done. And I just love it when you realize after its done that you could've done it better than you just did it.

This has been experimented on with beeswax, which I had intended to use to create a translucent 'submerged in water' look. Beeswax is crazy hard to control the first time using. Make sure you have a heat gun on hand and low expectations.

Some concept image ideas for a story I'm calling "Grassy Planet". There are a lot of problems I am dealing with trying to get the right look - it'll help if I get more helpful/ directional criticism than anything else.

Because I have no idea. These are kind of rushed. What little success I have has been due to strictly following the sage advice from those around me. These still need a lot of work (especially the girl) but they are really fun to do.

Used a friend and a costume from a manga called No. 5's as a subject for this painting. Trained as a traditional artist, most of the studies I pattern after have always been in nude. The nude is a beautiful figure when properly portrayed; but its not for me and wouldn't honestly come from me if I even did it. So my dilemma has always been the costume. This is probably one of the most honest paintings I've ever done, she was going to be in a dress - I just shut the door on the world and painted what I felt like painting. The whole time really excited. I love painting the idea of a beautiful woman in a geeky costume.

Those of you who don't mind a little graphic design, here is a visual update on my website. All designed and ready to go, this is the last of three I've promised myself to finish designing for DrawersImperative.com.

On another note, Lethologic (fish hands), the piece I entered into the Mayhew Art Contest is up on display in the HFAC 4th floor gallery on the west wall. And as I passed by the piece on my way to class today, I'm in a bit of disbelief, the piece was recognized as "best in show", which I really have no idea what means. . . but I'm happy. I really hope no one inquires about the piece, its creation was involved in many accidental applications, and on top of that, is on a panel not perfectly squared (the version you see on my blog has been squared through photoshop:).

Here is a good example of how my painting process is amateur. Intuitive problem solving directly on the canvas is not my forte. This painting has been worked over many many times. You get exited about an idea, you plan it out - a few days in and the motivation is gone. Color, composition, I kept kicking myself for diving in too fast. Now if I was serendipitous I wouldn't mind diving in because I would be able to problem solve directly on the canvas.

The added girl is representational of a muse. The muse that came in and helped me push this painting to its [more] finished stage. For others it represents Keoni's estranged relationships with the women he dates. The added objects are to hint to the viewer the woman's role as a muse.

First of many panels to come. The Studio program keeps me very productive. I've an ambitious goal to complete 18 of these panels in three weeks time. This piece is the first of those pieces and represents one of three fish & hand studies. The idea for this piece comes from a memory of owning fish in a tank, meticulously constructing the environment, (i.e. plant-life, caves, ground levels) and sitting hours in front of the tank observing the little fishes interact with my created world. it is a metaphor for a God complex - man and God are paralleled to fish and a gigantic hand.

There is a subtle image of scissors painted in the upper left-hand part of the panel, as well as red string tied around the fish tail.

I'm mostly in the studio these days prepping for my 1st year review in the grad program. . . very lonely studio. . . just 15.5 more paintings and I'll be free!!

In the meantime, I'm also trying to put some energy into a comic book I want to get off the ground; I mean, I'm so close - got a story, human intrigue, pompous humor, art nouveau, grand settings, and it's broken all down, but I am still working on character development.

Growing up with Voltron, Go-Rangers (Power Rangers), Yamato (Star-Blazers), Hokkuto-No-Ken (Fist of the North Star), and of course. . . Ultraman.
